Horizon Services, Inc. (HSI) provides alcohol, drug, and mental health related services to adults and adolescents. All programs are evidence-based and provide a safe environment for understanding and addressing substance use disorder (SUD) and mental health-related issues that keep people from their full potential. HSI’s prevention programs help youth develop healthy relationships and live substance-free lives. In addition, HSI works in the community helping families, businesses, and public agencies recognize and develop responses to SUD which create safer and healthier neighborhoods.
Many people are unaware that addiction is a disease.
In the past, some people considered addiction a character flaw, and that thinking created a negative stigma around the disease. Today, we know that addiction is a brain disorder.
We also understand that many people who struggle with addiction are victims of trauma, abuse, neglect, poverty or other life circumstances—and they require treatment, just like with any other chronic illness.
That’s why Horizon Services is here: to provide treatment and restore a sense of hope, peace of mind and belonging in people.
Because it’s important for more people to understand that a substance-free lifestyle is on the horizon.
Our Story
Horizon Services, originally named Horizon House, has been serving the Bay Area for more than 40 years. Our first program opened in 1976 with a $17,500 contract from Alameda County, which allowed us to establish sober living support services for men reentering the workforce.
Over the years, we have been able to expand our services to help women, provide co-education to both men and women, provide detoxification, and reach youth and those in the LGBTQ community.
As Horizon Services has grown, we have expanded our training and practices to address both the substance use and mental health issues many of our clients face.
Our clinical staff is overseen by our Clinical Services Department, which provides individual and group supervision and consultation to our programs. Program and administrative staff are trained and evaluated on an ongoing basis to increase our competency in the standards of care areas. All this experience means we are able to help all kinds of people recover from substance use disorder and determine what level of care and array of support services each person needs to start a life of recovery.
